The tickets were bought by a lottery regular in 2013, and many months went by before the Pennsylvania Lottery made a public announcement that the winner had until Mar. 13 of this year to cash all 25 of them in. However, no one did.

Card Player Poker Tour Paddy Power Irish Open Begins April 18

One of the most exciting spots of the Card Player Poker Tour – the Paddy Power Irish Open – will begin April 18 with a race to crown the latest champion.

Complete live coverage of the four-day €2,250 no-limit hold’em main event will be provided on CardPlayer.com so fans across the world can follow the action until only one lucky player is left standing. A live stream of the final table will be provided by pokertube.com.

With a colorful history spanning more than three decades, the Irish Open will crown yet another champion April 21st and is expected to amass a prize pool of more than €1 million, just as it did last year when winner Ian Simpson picked up a €265,000 ($ 339,604) payday.

“It’s amazing,” Simpson said of the Irish Open. “You have to be there to fully appreciate it. Sometimes at a tournament I’ve sat down with eight other players and they barely say a word. The table chatter at the Irish Open makes for a really sociable game. It’s kinda like a home game that way. Except there’s a huge prizepool to play for! Everyone is in good cheer and there’s always plenty Guinness being drunk.”

The 2014 winner will take his or her place in Irish Open history and join the ranks of past winners such as three-time champion Noel Furlong, Kevin Vandermissen, Neil Channing, Joe Beevers and two-time champion Liam Flood.

One lucky player will also take home an additional €50,000 in cash through Paddy Power Poker’s Sole Survivor promotion. All players who qualify for the tournament on Paddy Power Poker will be entered into the promotion and the player who outlasts all other qualifiers will receive the money. The second-through-sixth place Sole Survivors will be awarded entry into the 2015 Irish Open.

Ian SimpsonSimpson can attest to the value of the Sole Survivor promotion, as he was the lucky winner in 2012.

“Coming in fourth in 2012 and winning the Sole Survivor promotion ended up setting me up for life. It gave me the chance I needed to develop as a player, gain so much live experience and become the player I am now. Thanks largely to that experience I was able to come back and win it in 2013,” Simpson said.

The much-anticipated tournament will be held at the Double Tree by Hilton, better known by its former moniker — the Burlington Hotel, on Burlington Road in Dublin. Just minutes from the city center, the five-star hotel is newly refurbished and boasts luxurious accommodations and modern facilities.

While taking a break from the poker action, players can walk a few minutes to Aviva Stadium to catch a game of rugby, experience Dublin’s legendary nightlife in the Temple Bar area, shop along Grafton Street, or take in a comedy show or concert at the Bord Gais Energy Theater.

Gambling Business: Pennsylvania Table Game Revenue Up Year-Over-Year For April

On Thursday, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board announced that revenue generated from the action at table games at Pennsylvania casinos during April of 2013 was 8.9 percent greater than table games revenue from the same period the previous year.

The gross table games revenue produced by the state’s 11 casinos was $ 61,552,334, which is $ 5,052,710 higher than in April 2012 when revenue was $ 56,499,624.

According to the report, “with an average of 1,041 tables in operation statewide on a daily basis, tax revenue produced this April was $ 8,859,845.”

Despite the success of the table games, overall gaming revenue fell slightly.

“Coupled with figures on slot machine revenue released earlier this month, overall gross revenue from both slots and tables was $ 266,707,740 this April, just slightly below the $ 270,649,126 generated in April of last year,” the report said.

Pennsylvania is the second most lucrative casino market in the country, taking in more than $ 3.1 billion annually now. Nevada is at the top with around $ 10 billion per year.

The first casino in Pennsylvania opened in 2007, after the business was legalized in 2004.

Slot machines are taxed at a rate of 55 percent in the state, while table games are at 16 percent. Those two figures are high relative to other jurisdictions in the country.

For more news from Pennsylvania, check out its state page.

Crazy Gambling Stories From The Month Of April

The gambling world can sometimes produce really off-the-wall stories. Here’s a look at some of the most colorful from the month of April. Also take a look back at what weird stuff happened in March, February, January, December and November.

20 Armed Robbers Attack South African Casino

About 20 armed robbers Sunday attacked a famous casino in South Africa, but the attempt failed following a shootout with police that left three people wounded, a media report said.

In the morning shootout at the Emperors Palace casino in Johannesburg, the robbers opened fire at police, Xinhua cited the South African Broadcasting Company (SABC) as saying.

Father Says Online Poker’s ‘Black Friday’ Killed His Son

Matthew Anthony Roth, 26, of Fairbanks, Alaska, killed himself [Tuesday]. Las Vegas police said he shot himself in the head as he sat in a car at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Wild Wild West Gambling Hall and Hotel at 3330 Tropicana Ave. The hotel is just west of the Strip casinos where Matt spent his final days playing poker, his passion.

An Ex-Wife Threatens Steve Wynn’s Casino Empire

Elaine Wynn has asked a federal court for permission to sell the Wynn Resorts (WYNN) shares she was awarded in the couple’s 2009 divorce. A sale of even half of her 9.6 percent stake could trigger a series of events that would threaten her ex-husband’s sway over the $ 13 billion gaming company, his lavish, company-financed lifestyle—and possibly his personal fortune. “She’s the swing shareholder,” says William Thompson, a professor emeritus at the University of Nevada, who studies the gambling industry. “This could be the final damper on the guy.”

San Jose Casino Regulator Hid Investments with False Filings

Newly-filed documents obtained by San Jose Inside show that San Jose’s top casino watchdog repeatedly filed false statements over the course of a decade while under penalty of perjury.

The revised documents bolster accusations by Casino M8trix co-owner Eric Swallow, who claimed in a lawsuit against the city that San Jose Police Department gambling czar Richard Teng had “sustained and substantial conflicts of interest through his lucrative private consulting business, the details of which he has hidden from public scrutiny, in violation of the city of San Jose’s Code of Ethics and the public trust.”

State Says 3,544 Lottery Winners Getting Welfare, Living With Someone Who Does

Michigan’s Department of Human Services said Monday it found 3,544 lottery winners on the state’s welfare rolls or living with someone receiving public assistance in 2012.

A new law requires DHS to cross-check the Michigan Lottery’s list of winners of $ 1,000 or more with public assistance recipients.

Powerball Winner Takes Lump Sum, Promises To Pay Rent For His Neighborhood

Pedro Quezada, who just recently won the $ 338 million Powerball jackpot, has decided to take the lump sum of $ 221 million ($ 152 million after taxes) and, according to the New York Daily News, has pledged to pay the rent of everyone in his neighborhood for a month or two.

Quezada will also reportedly appear in court Monday for $ 29,000 worth of unpaid child support, which he can now easily cover. He’s the father of five children, ages five to 23.

Poker Dealer Fighting $ 75K Fine After He Admitted To Stealing $ 200 At Casino

After stealing $ 200 worth of chips and putting them in his tip box, 27-year-old Matthew Eisenberg, a former employee of The Rivers Casino, was caught and charged. He pleaded guilty, but under a Pennsylvania statute designed to protect the casino industry and the state, Eisenberg was hit with the minimum $ 75,000 fine. The maximum for such a crime is $ 150,000.

Brothers Accused Of Stealing $ 5M Scratch-Off Ticket

The Post-Standard reported that two brothers who allegedly attempted to claim $ 5 million from a stolen scratch-off ticket will elect to have a judge rule on their case rather than a jury.

“I feel much better having it in the hands of someone who is trained legally, who knows the law and knows how to apply the law,” the defense attorney for one of the men told The Post-Standard. “Everything is going to be based upon the facts and not on emotion. Juries tend to work on emotion, and everybody on a jury in this case would have a predisposition.”

Gambler Sues Casino For Falling Out Of Chair

A Pennsylvania man is pursuing legal recourse against Parx Casino in Bensalem for allegedly providing a faulty chair at a slot machine that caused him to fall out of it and injury himself, PhillyBlurbs.com reported.

Davis alleged “several and debilitating personal injuries on or about the entire head, neck, back, shoulders, arms, legs, torso and extremities” from the fall.

Obama’s Pick For French Ambassador Out After Ties To Illegal Poker Games

According to The New York Post, the billionaire businessman who President Obama was looking to select as the next ambassador to France decided to decline the appointment after he was linked to a high-stakes underground poker ring in New York City, one that was busted earlier this month by the Justice Department.
