New Poker Chips For Borgata After Tourney Fiasco

In January, a massive poker tournament at Borgata in Atlantic City was suspended, and later canceled, after it was discovered that fake chips were in play. This week, the casino said that it is using new, high-tech tournament poker chips, the Associated Press reported.

The new chips reportedly have more colors and can be authenticated under ultraviolet light.

“This was very expensive, but very necessary,” Joe Lupo, the casino’s senior vice president, told the AP. “In order to have the biggest tournaments in Atlantic City and as the market leader, we need to ensure the integrity of the games.”

Late last month, the state of New Jersey approved the new chips. The state said that the new chips, ranging from 1,000 to 500,000 in denomination, were “acceptable for use.” Borgata is doing business with Game On Chip Company.

Christian Lusardi, the man accused of the cheating, reportedly is in jail awaiting trial.

The prize pool was frozen with just 27 left. Some of the entrants have filed a lawsuit against Borgata, alleging that it didn’t do a good enough job to prevent the incident.

Borgata Cancels $2M Poker Tournament With 27 Left Amid State Investigation Into Counterfeit Chips

Photo via Twitter of entrant Luke EdwardsThe Associated Press reported early Saturday that the state of New Jersey has decided to cancel the first event of the Borgata Winter Poker Open with 27 people remaining due to an investigation into the counterfeit chips being used.

The state has said that at least one person used a “substantial amount” of phony tournament chips at some point in the event. The prize money was frozen pending the investigation.

According to reports, an extra one million in tournament chips could have been in the event.

A total of 4,814 players put up the $ 560 to enter. It’s unclear if any will receive refunds.

The tournament was suspended on Friday when suspicion of fake chips first arose.

“Thus far, investigators have found that one or more tournament entrants improperly introduced a significant number of counterfeit chips into the tournament, gaining an unfair advantage and compromising the integrity of play for the event,” Tom Ballance, the Borgata’s president and chief operating officer reportedly said Saturday morning.

“It is extremely unfortunate that the criminal actions of these individuals can have a detrimental impact on more than 4,000 other entrants,” he added. “We fully understand and regret the disappointment this cancellation causes our valued customers, and we will work diligently with DGE investigators to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. The integrity of our games and the confidence of our players is of the utmost importance to us.”

Other events in the series are moving along as scheduled.

No Felony Charge, Just Demotion For Nuke Chief Accused Of Counterfeiting Casino Chips

The U.S. nuclear weapons commander who was accused of using phony casino chips in a poker game at a casino in Iowa reportedly was demoted this week by the federal government.

The state of Iowa decided earlier not to pursue any criminal charges against 57-year-old Vice Adm. Tim Giardina, even though passing at least $ 1,500 worth of counterfeit chips, which is what he allegedly did, is considered a serious crime in the state.

According to the Omaha World-Herald, Giardina has been reassigned from his position as deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command. He will move over to duties at the Pentagon.

He lost his three-star ranking, as well.

The alleged incident happened at Horseshoe Council Bluffs casino in June.

An Iowa official defended the move not to prosecute over the case:

“Considering Adm. Giardina’s lack of criminal history as well as his career in the military, we concluded there wasn’t any chance of him receiving anything other than deferred judgment,” Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilber told the World-Herald.

“We chose to let (the Defense Department) handle it.”

Thanks to the recent reassignment, the entire case appears to be closed.

Located at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Nebraska, U.S. Strategic Command is one of nine unified commands in the Department of Defense.

IGT To Give 1 Million In Play Chips In New Deal

Registering for free poker via the website of Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel and Casino will net you 1 million in play-money chips. The hope for the brick-and-mortar and International Game Technology, which will provide the platform, is that it will soon entice you to get out into the real world and gamble for real money.

IGT, which specializes in providing slot machines all around Sin City, will utilize the technology of DoubleDown Casino — a Facebook application that it bought in January 2012 for $ 500 million. The deal with Hard Rock is IGT’s first land-based relationship of this nature in Las Vegas.

“[The casino] is giving players more entertainment, even when they’re not on the casino floor,” an executive at IGT said in a company press release. The deal was called a “rapidly growing revenue sharing relationship” that provides “an advantageous opportunity to deliver targeted marketing messages to […] customers.”

DoubleDown boats 5.2 million “monthly users.” In addition to poker, it offers other games such as slots, roulette and black jack. According to DoubleDown’s terms of use, its games “do not replicate the odds of winning or the payouts of similar games found in casinos.”

DoubleDown allows you to play for free, and also allows you to buy virtual goods and monies with “real world money.” However, you can’t withdraw or redeem stuff.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, IGT has similar deals with a few other casinos in the region. The company has been issued a license for real-money online poker in Nevada, but that activity is still being hashed out through the state’s regulatory process.

The Hard Rock is owned by Canadian real estate firm Brookfield Asset Management.
