Eric Blair Wins WSOP Circuit Main Event At The Lodge

Eric BlairA total of 330 entries were made in the 2014 World Series of Poker Circuit $ 1,675 no-limit hold’em main event at The Lodge Casino in Black Hawk, Colorado. From that field only one player could emerge victorious with the title and in the end it was poker pro Eric Blair that came out on top, earning $ 116,325 and his first WSOP Circuit gold ring for the win.

“They all played really well,” said Blair of his final table opponents after his win. “They were tough. No one was giving it away. It was mentally grueling.”

Blair entered the final day in the middle of the pack, but less than an orbit into the day a key hand arose that rocketed him toward the top of the chip counts when he eliminated Corey Zedo in fifth place ($ 28,967) by besting his 6Diamond Suit6Club Suit with the KHeart SuitKClub Suit. From there he was able to make it to heads-up play with Nicholas Petitti. The two battled it out for over three hours, but in the end Blair was victorious.

In addition to the title, the hardware and the money Blair also earned 480 Card Player Player of the Year points. This was his third title of the year, having just won a $ 1,172 Deepstacks Extravaganza $ 300,000 guaranteed event at the Venetian roughly two weeks earler and a $ 2,100 prelim at the Wynn Classic in April. With another small final table finish already under his belt for 2014 as well Blair now sits in 20th place in the overall POY standings, with 1,632 points and year-to-date earnings of $ 279,996.

Here is a look at the payouts and POY points awarded at this final table:

Eric Drache and Brian ‘Sailor’ Roberts To Be Inducted Into Poker Hall Of Fame

A Young Eric Drache Stands Behind Doyle BrunsonThe Poker Hall of Fame has two new members. After nominations from the public and votes from media and the living 36 members of the hall, the governing council has selected Eric Drache and Brian ‘Sailor’ Roberts for its 2012 class.

The two poker legends will be officially inducted in a special ceremony at the Rio in Las Vegas on October 30 prior to the conclusion of the World Series of Poker main event final table.

Drache, an accomplished seven-card stud player who has made five WSOP final tables, is best known for his contributions to the game off the felt. Drache served as the WSOP’s tournament director in the 1970s and is credited with the creation of satellite tournaments, allowing players to pool money to get enough scratch together for a full buy-in. During his long career, he has served as the poker room manager for Bellagio, Golden Nugget and Mirage and even worked as a consultant on numerous televised poker events.

“I’m not only surprised and honored to have been selected, I’m also a bit embarrassed considering the other nominees,” said Drache. “When Jack Binion and myself worked on creating the Hall of Fame, I never considered myself a potential candidate. I’m particularly happy for the family of ‘Sailor’ Roberts. ‘Sailor’ by everyone’s account, including my own personal observations, was a great player and played many games very well.”

Brian ‘Sailor’ Roberts, who passed away in 1995, was a former traveling partner of ‘Amarillo Slim’ Preston and Doyle Brunson. The Texas gambler was a two-time WSOP bracelet winner and won the main event in 1975.

Brian 'Sailor' Roberts“In a time fifty years ago when poker players relied on luck, Sailor was developing sophisticated strategies that would enable him to make his own luck,” said Hall of Fame member Crandell Addington. “At a time in which professional poker players were viewed as outlaws and poker was illegal, he formed a partnership with Doyle and Slim and they traveled across the country from poker game to poker game. They deployed advanced strategies unknown at the time that featured playing their opponents hands on many occasions rather than their own hands. More often than not, they got the money.”

There are now 44 members of the Poker Hall of Fame. In order to be considered, a player must be at least 40 years old, played poker against top competition, played for high stakes, played well enough to earn the respect of their peers and stood the test of time. Non-players must have contributed to the overall growth of the game, with indelible positive and lasting results.

Here’s a look at all of the members.

Eric Baldwin Wins NAPT Bounty Shootout

Eric Baldwin took down the NAPT Bounty Shootout. The PokerStars-sponsored North American Poker Tour $ 5,250 Bounty Shootout wrapped up Thursday with Eric “Basebaldy” Baldwin winning the final table and the top prize of $ 134,280.

Action kicked off Tuesday at the Crystal Casino in Compton, CA., with 81 players taking their seats at nine tables. The winner of each table earned $ 20,000, along with a seat at the winner-take-all final table. Players also earned bounties of $ 1,000 for each player they eliminated along the way.

Those advancing to the final table were: Tom Marchese, Pat Pezzin, Mohsin Charania, Michael Mizrachi, Kevin MaPhee, Justin Young, Eric Baldwin, David Williams, and Clint Coffee.

Players fell one by one until Baldwin found himself heads up against Justin Young for the NAPT bounty shooutout title. Despite Young’s 3-1 chip lead, Baldwin made a comeback and after several hours of heads up play their duel came to an end. Both players got all in pre-flop, with Young holding ADiamond SuitQDiamond Suit and Baldwin on top with KHeart SuitKClub Suit. The kings held and Baldwin took down the title and added $ 134,280 to the $ 20,000 he got for winning his first table and 3,000 in bounties.

This event was filmed and will be shown on ESPN2 in December.

Here’s a look at the final table payouts:

1. Eric Baldwin — $ 134,280 + $ 20,000 + $ 3,000 in bounties
2. Justin Young — $ 20,000 + $ 6,000 in bounties
3. David Williams — $ 20,000 + $ 4,000 in bounties
4. Mohsin Charania — $ 20,000 + $ 5,000 in bounties
5. Tom Marchese — $ 20,000 + $ 4,000 in bounties
6. Clint Coffee — $ 20,000 + $ 3,000 in bounties
7. Pat Pezzin — $ 20,000 + $ 2,000 in bounties
8. Michael Mizrachi — $ 20,000 + $ 4,000 in bounties
9. Kevin MacPhee — $ 20,000 + $ 3,000 in bounties

Other Notable Prelim NAPT Event Winners:

The $ 5,000 heads up event (no. 3) drew 61 entrants, creating a prize pool of $ 281,057. In the end, David Peters bested Chance Kornuth in the final match to take home the first-place prize of $ 112,257. The win marked the fourth time in 2010 that Peters has cashed for six-figures. He has surpassed $ 3 million in career tournament winnings.

A couple of days later in the $ 3,000 no-limit hold’em event, another young poker pro came out on top. Andrew ‘luckychewy’ Lichtenberger was the last man standing in a field of 38 players, earning $ 49,760 for the win. High stakes pro Matthew ‘ADZ124’ Marafioti finished runner-up for $ 27,645.
